Introduction to English Literature

The Beginning of English Literature

England was occupied already  before the Romans conquered the land and the invasion of Europe began.

They are  the peace- loving, agricultural people called the Celts

The language they are using is knownn as  Celtic.

The Anglo- Saxon brought the English language in the land of Celts during the Middle Age.

Alfred the Great propagated the English language in England during the Middle Age.

The Duke of Normandy who propagated the French language in England in 1066 is the Duke of Wessex.

When the Holy Romans came the brought their language Latin.

The 3 Germanic tribes were the Angles, Saxons, and the Jutes.

The story of English literature begins begins with the Germanic tradition of the Anglo – Saxon settlers Angles, Saxons and Jutes.

They came from Denmark and Sweden.

This is where  epic Beowulf started.

Beowulf  is the best example of warrior literature.
